Thanksgiving Thoughts - what sparked my motorcycling bug....
By definition this is the time of year when we give thanks for the
life we have and the people we share it with, especially family.

I recently came across an old photo that reminds me who I have to
give thanks for my lifelong passion for motorcycles.

Mum and Uncle Fred

Mum & Uncle Fred

This photo was taken around 1951 in London, England.
My Great-Uncle Fred was a very keen motorcyclist and must have
been quite wealthy to own a new HRD, which later became Vincent.
At the time, these were very expensive, thoroughbred motorcycles for
the enlightened.
You can see that motorcycle protective gear at that time was
concerned with keeping the rain out, and helmets were leather
flying helmets at best.
When I was growing up in England, Uncle Fred was my favorite
relation - a great character and storyteller, adults and children alike
would sit on the edge of their seats when he was in full flow.

In a spot at 100 mph
I remember part of one story when he was riding on a main single
lane highway near London, and opened up the bike to do 100 mph;
for some reason he took his hands off the bars (they had a friction
throttle to keep it open), and the bike was tracking straight as an
arrow. The sure sign of a well set up fine motorcycle.
But when he tried to grab hold of the bars again, the overpowering
wind pressure stopped him from leaning forward to reach them!
As the riveting story unfolded, it was some miles until he thought
of a way to work his hands back onto the controls!

I heard this story, probably 15 full minutes, half a dozen times,
and never failed to be excited and terrified.

Anyway, exaggeration or not, these stories undoubtedly were the
vital spark for my interest, then I must confess -
obsession with motorcycles.

And I give thanks for the inspiration he provided.

Big dent in his head
In fact he had a huge concave dent in his forehead the size of half
an orange, which was the result of a motorcycle spill, but no one
ever talked about it - I guess that was just one of those things in
that time. If you survived you had a souvenir.

So it's kind of ironic, I would end up spending my life in the
motorcycle industry,
and in the protection field!
